Those Dancing Days

These Swedish chicks are adorable, and this super-short song is pretty awesome. Their style is part Northern Soul, which apparently "is a music and dance movement that emerged from the British mod scene, initially in northern England in the late 1960s." Think Austin Powers. I will never cease to be amazed by the number of music genres out there...

Mika

When I first heard Mika's first single--Grace Kelly--I was immediately obsessed and excitedly told my friends about this great new addictive song. It, along with Lollipop, are among the top 15 played tunes in my iTunes, and I've been anxiously awaiting his next album. Clearly I have absolutely no problem with delicious sugary pop. (I even bought Aqua's album in high school and still enjoy running to it every once in a while.)

Mika's album won't be out until the end of September, but the first single leads me to believe that it will be full of more pop gems. I, for one, cannot wait.

Manic Street Preachers

Manic Street Preachers have been around since the 80s, but I've never really paid attention to them until recently. They seem to be one of those bands that was big in Britain but never really made it across the ocean, or else I just missed it. This tune is off of their latest album, which apparently features lyrics from their guitarist who "mysteriously disappeared" in the mid 90s. Very mysterious indeed.

Tinted Windows

Who can resist a super group comprised of musicians from The Smashing Pumpkins, Hanson, Fountains of Wayne, and Cheap Trick. Three old(er) dudes and Taylor Hanson are bound to make something interesting.

Fleet Foxes

This is the third single off of Fleet Foxes album, and I think it is my favorite of their tunes. It also makes me want to go to Greece.

Metric

This tune, off of Metric's latest album Fantasies, is one of those that kind of makes you feel like you need to do whatever it is you're doing as fast as possible and develop restless leg syndrome while you're at it. It also makes you want to listen to it over and over.

Wale

Anyone who can get Wale (pronounced Wah-lay) from Olubowale Victor Akintimehin is clearly pretty f-ing awesome. The DC native has been around for years and finally has an album coming out (in October). The first single, Chillin, is an excellent tune, but after you listen to this remix a few times, the original will sound almost painfully slow. This song also demonstrates Lady Gaga's uncanny ability to sounds exactly like M.I.A.

Regina Spektor

I love Regina, and I've been listening to her new album Far for a while now trying to figure out which song is my favorite. I think I've finally decided. While the album has lots of excellent tunes on it, this one is the most unique and the most Regina I think.

Deer Tick

The lead singer of Deer Tick, John McCauley, has an very distinctive voice, and this single off of their new album -- Born on Flag Day -- definitely shows it. I'm partial to Ashamed, which is on their first album, so here are both.

Anjulie

Here's another Canadian for you. I wasn't a fan of this chicks other tunes I listened to, but this one is pretty catchy. Kind of reminds me of that Amerie song that was so popular few years ago. Also, according to Wikipedia, two of her unreleased songs were featured on The Hills and The City, so clearly she must be the next big thing. ha.

Meese

I used to be all over the iTunes free singles, but although they delivered some occasional gems, I kind of got out of the habit of downloading them because of all the crap that was mixed in. I did download this one recently, and I must say it's worthy of potato chip listening. I think it must be the na-nas. Any song with na-nas is like guaranteed to be catchy, probably thanks to Steam. And plus, these guys look so un-band like it's funny. I feel like I'm looking at the cast of the next preachy sitcom about awkward teenage boys.

Girls Aloud

So this girl group is in no way new, but I find it amazing that a cheesy spice girls ripoff has existed for so long in the UK and even managed to produce some listenable sugar pop and no one I know has ever heard of them. They came out of a reality show, and according to Wikipedia, the Guinness Book of World Records lists them as the "Most Successful Reality TV Group." I mean really? There's a category for that? Anyway, I couldn't choose between these two brit-tastic gems (which I found after weeding through a lot of unbearableness), so here's both. Please enjoy the intelligent lyrics and complex tonality.

All I know about Harlem Shakes is that they are from New York. Surprise surprise. This song falls pretty squarely in the indie rock genre, and it definitely grows on you.

Little Boots

I wasn't a huge fan of Little Boots' single when I first heard it, but it's definitely grown on me. It finally reached 10 plays in my iTunes, which must mean something considering I have over a month's worth of music to choose from. Her second single, Remedy, is fairly generic, but considering she is a cute Brit, she will probably become famous at some point, as long as she sunbathes topless, goes to rehab, or gets really fat.

Johnny Flynn

It's probably obvious why I decided to listen to Johnny Flynn, and while I totally thought he was Irish until I looked him up, he still has some pretty good tunes, wrongly-spelled last name and all. He also looks nothing like I thought he would. Apparently he's just an enigma.

Listen: The Box

Mandy Moore

While I want to try to stay away from typical radio pop here, I couldn't resist this little gem, mainly because CCH (soon to be CCC!) has a vehement dislike of Mandy. I still don't quite understand her hatred, but she once told me it is because she heard that Mandy is just like the character she played on Entourage. Right...

Either way, the lyrics to this song -- which is catchy but incredibly stupid -- pretty much epitomize C's feelings about Mrs. Moore.
